Toronto Western Hospital

Program Description

  • The APS team at Toronto Western Hospital supports the full spectrum of patients experiencing acute pain in our institution with our primary focus on post-surgical care.

  • One of the primary goals is to enable patient-centered care through modalities of pain management that allow individuals to maximize control over their own pain management.  This includes options such as intravenous and oral patient controlled analgesia, patient controlled peripheral nerve blocks and epidural analgesia.

  • The TWH APS experience is a core educational experience for trainees of all levels.  We routinely provide training in perioperative pain management to medical students, nursing students, anesthesia residents and clinical anesthesia fellows on a daily basis.

  • We also host trainees from our surgical partners to help develop a comfort and experience in managing complex post-surgical pain. The APS team continued as a regular partner in educational rounds for the anesthesia department with a focuses on in-depth review of challenging scenarios, up-to-date knowledge of pain related topics and in depth QA analysis of patient outcomes.  These conversations around complex pain issues allow discussion of new approaches to management of these challenging situations.

  • Core to our mission is the concept of patient safety and quality assurance through review of critical incident with the goal of continual process improvement. This work is an integral part of the APS team’s quality focus and provides support to both the service itself and our partners managing routine pain throughout the hospital when needed.
